Belting covered in this handbook includes conveyor belting (used to transport bulk or packaged, boxed and bagged materials) and bucket elevator belting. The belting may be made of natural or synthetic rubbers as well as plastics, such as vinyl, with carcasses of textile fabrics, which are woven, nonwoven, solid woven, or stitched; fabric cords; or of steel cables. A new chapter presenting an energy efficient label and scale is included in this revision. This handbook is intended for the general guidance and reference of persons interested in the selection and use of conveyor and elevator belting.

The ARPM, in response to a request from the Society of Automotive Engineers, has established and administered a system of using colored yarns to identify hose manufacturers. Initially, the colored yarn system was applicable to only brake hose manufacturers, but in response to worldwide requests for colored yarn code assignments, the restriction was removed. Most U.S. hose manufacturers have been assigned codes. The use of hose identified by colored yarns incorporated into their structure is more reliable in identifying the manufacturer than hose marked on the exterior surface since the interior colored yarn is more likely to be retained and remain identifiable throughout the entire life of the hose.

Also provided in the Preface is information on the assignment and/or purchase of new codes, the history of the system, and current instructions for its use.

Rubber manufacturers seek in this handbook to establish a language which will enable engineers to express, on their drawings, requirements which will give them what they need, but not more than they need. To accomplish this, we set up the “language” on the following pages in the form of symbols, charts and definitions.

The manufacturing techniques, capabilities, limitations and problems are different for molded rubber parts than for extruded rubber parts or lathe-cut or cellular (expanded and sponge) rubber parts. Each is treated in a separate chapter with its own charts and definitions. Quality conformance is treated in a separate section.

This handbook has been compiled to provide authoritative information on materials, constructions, tolerances, applications, fittings, storage, care, and maintenance of hose.
